Take Home Literacy Bags
Take Home Literacy Bags are thematic, content related collections of fiction and non-fiction books, with accompanying activities.  Their purpose is to connect school and home as well as increase parents' knowledge about their child's abilities. They are meant to supplement and extend our curriculum while providing opportunities to practice recently acquired skills and knowledge.

A
contract is sent home to each family.  The letter explains the Literacy Bag program, as well as the rules and responsibilites of the parents and children.

Each bag contains 2-4 books, a journal related to the bag's theme, a hands-on activity involving manipulatives, a stuffed toy and a parent letter explaining the activity.  Some of the bags circulate year round; other bags are monthly or by special occasion.

On the day the bag is sent home the activities are to be completed that night and returned to school the following day, unless otherwise noted on the parent letter.  If bags are not returned in a timely manner two times, bags will no longer be sent home with the student.  Parents will be responsible for replacing lost or damaged totes or materials.

Most of my ideas were accumulated from sites on the internet and  the CTP book:
Home and Back with Books by Kimberly Jordano.
